Here at Market Day LDN towers, we couldn’t be more excited about pancake day, which is coming up this week. Traditionally the last day for gorging before the start of Lent, it was seen as a good chance to use up all the eggs, flour and sugar in your cupboards. We’re happy with any excuse for a blow out! We’ll be bringing you all the best pancake related stalls from around London, but for now here’s our guide about where to be this Shrove Tuesday.
The Parliamentary Pancake Race
This annual event is surely up there with the Olympics and the Six Nations when it comes to great competitions of our time. Teams from the Commons, the Lords and the press will be racing around Victoria Tower Gardens outside the House of Commons, flipping pancakes as they go. There’s a joke to be made here about tossers, but it’s beneath us. Naga Munchetty, of BBC Breakfast and of course Strictly fame will be firing the starting gun on this year’s race and it’s all in great cause as it’ll be raising funds for Rehab, who help people with mental and physical disabilities rebuild independent lives. It all kicks off at 10.00 am.
The Pancake and Shake Challenge at The Diner
If you like a challenge with your food, head to The Diner on The Strand where you can eat for free! There’s only one small catch… you have to see off three giant chocolate chip pancakes and a chocolate milkshake, without water, in less than six minutes. Succeed and you’ll be bathed in glory, fail and you’ll have to pay £13.50. But that goes to homelessness charity Shelter, so it could be worse.
Borough Market Pancake Race
If you’re a regular visitor to Market Day LDN, you’ll know the we LOVE Borough Market, so we’ll definitely be checking out their Pancake Day Race. Local businesses will face off against each other for the race, with all proceeds going to the charity Paintings in Hospitals. Why not join us from 12.30, and pick up a tasty lunch from a local stall while you’re there?
Pancake Day Rave the Ministry of Sound
And finally, if all that sounds a little sedate for you, maybe you’d prefer to take part in “the world’s only Pancake Day Rave” at the Ministry of Sound. From 10.00 pm to 4.00 am they’re offering £3 entry and free pancakes to the first 500 people to turn up. Plus there’ll be pancake eating competitions, with a £100 prize up for grabs.
