Where to spend your Pancake Day in the capital…
There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the simpler things in life and especially on Shrove Tuesday…feel free to douse traditional pancakes with lots of lemon and sugar before devouring.
But don’t forget, it’s 2017. And if there’s ever a time to branch out and shock the mainstream, it’s now. So down your lemon and sugar bowl, and set to the streets of London to find new ways of enjoying Pancake Day.
Head to KERB Camden to experience crepes with a difference. The batter is buttery, balanced and beautiful. And the fillings are to die for. Choose between miso salted caramel with amaretti biscuit crunch or tiramisu mascarpone cream. Or if you’re more into savoury, we can’t resist the buckwheat crepes with truffle mushroom, candy bacon and egg. Get to Camden…NOW!
Whitecross Street is the place to go if you’re after pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Maison Crêpes are the perfect spot for a savoury fix with their gluten-free buckwheat pancakes inspired by French recipes. Grab a ‘Provençale’ which is filled with chicken, cheese, mixed veg, mustard and an egg. Leave the office dead on 12pm though as the queues are always long!
So it may say pancake in the title but these mini treats are really Dutch poffertjes. The Greenwich Market stall uses organic rice flour in the batter and tops with a variety of homemade sauces and toppings. The salted caramel variation comes highly recommended but you can’t really go wring with Nutella and raspberries can you?
Ok, ok, so they’re technically not pancakes, nor crêpes, nor poffertjes. But what’s a bit of extra sugar and fat in the batter between friends? If you’re after a sturdier structure this Shrove Tuesday, head to Nosteagia at PUMP in Shoreditch for a waffle like you’ve never had before. Read more here.
